Five years ago, if someone even hinted that Nintendo’s most iconic character, Mario, should ply his trade in the vast reaches of outer space, they would’ve been sent back to the mental asylum where they came from. Enter Super Mario Galaxy 2, where the crazy has happened, and as the title suggests, for the second time.
The original Galaxy game took the old adage “don’t fix what ain’t broke”, referring to nearly every Mario game invented, and blasted it off into orbit just for kicks. What resulted was arguably the best Mario instalment since the masterful Super Mario 64 with so many new features that defy gravity in every single way imaginable. Factor in that the main idea of the game is to collect ‘power stars’, which never gets old (repeat, NEVER) due to clever level design.
Galaxy 2 contains all the wholesome space-junk goodness that made the original fantastic and makes it better. The characters look smooth, the colours are vibrant and the game never slows down a notch, remaining crisp throughout.
One of the most amazing gameplay features is the ability to seamlessly run around a planet on a 360 degree axis, launch to another planet within seconds, then continue to run, jump, spin, and stomp, all without the player feeling overwhelmed. While it may sound like a lather-rinse-repeat method, not one planet is the exact same as another. The addition of Yoshi is a master stroke, with Mario being able to saddle up on the dinosaur to open up many alternate gameplay options. Elaborate boss battles are truly rewarding, especially those staged on massive planetoids, giving the fight an epic euphoria.
With over 200 stars to collect, the game is certainly no overnight rental. Beautiful graphics, outstanding gameplay, and a thrilling musical score to keep things rolling, all integrate to provide the ultimate gaming package, for both young and old.
